CaseLines, which has been at the heart of the digitisation of the Crown Courts, last night (15 November) announced its expansion into family and civil court work that will see it make a play for the business of large commercial law firms.
CaseLines prepares and delivers digital evidence bundles to the courtroom, allows judges to make electronic notes during the hearing, and last night unveiled its new video streaming capability, which will enable counsel to easily move around lengthy video evidence as it is viewed in court on any device.
In 2015, CaseLines, an Azure-based platform, won the contract from HM Courts & Tribunals Service to digitise the Crown Court – a six-month engagement that, following a successful pilot in Leeds and Southwark Crown Court, it began rolling out in October 2015. The platform holds more than 17 million pages of electronic evidence securely in the cloud and is used daily by 18,000 users including over 1,000 judges.
The London-based company is now focused on expanding its presence in the civil sector, both in the UK and overseas, having in 2014 been selected by The Supreme Court for all cases that go to appeal.
Its focus will be on large and multi-national litigation practices that need scalable systems. One of its largest civil cases currently is being heard in the Royal Courts of Justice, involving 109,000 pages of evidence.
Speaking of the flexibility of the paperless system, CaseLines’ managing director David Jackson told Legal IT Insider: “It takes us about two hours to load up into any data centre. When our clients say, ‘How long to set up’ we say, ‘Is today ok?’”
He adds: “New products are available in different languages at the flick of a switch.” At last night’s event, CaseLines demonstrated its Arabic language capability.
