ILTA London event 9th Feb: “Shining a Light on the Real Problem of Today’s Security Monitoring Systems”

This free to attend ILTA event is scheduled for 15:30 – 17:30 on 9th February 2017 at the London offices of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP
If you could shine a spotlight on cyberattacks, where would you shine it? At first glance, it may seem like a silly question and yet this is exactly how security monitoring systems work. It is not unusual for a large firm to have half a dozen different monitoring systems — each shining a spotlight on one aspect of the information security infrastructure.
The reality is that hackers have little difficulty navigating the dark patches of a network, ensuring that their attacks are all but invisible to individual monitoring systems. It’s left to the skill, knowledge and experienced eye of the hard working security analyst to try to spot these attacks.
Dan Wood, the Information Security Project Manager at Freshfields, will lead an interactive session with plenty of opportunity to ask questions and explore and debate the need for a paradigm shift in security approaches. He will be supported by subject matter expert John Davies, the Managing Director at Pervade Software.
Attendees will:
• Learn about what’s under the bonnet of most monitoring systems
• Hear real-life examples of how spotlights are being dodged and with what effect
• Drill down through an example external attack (Slow Death DOS) and an internal attack (WMI)
• Examine remediation strategies and the benefits of bringing your SOC and NOC together again
