London law firm Anthony Gold is the latest to be hit by a phishing attack, resulting in its clients being sent emails purporting to be on its behalf, which asked recipients to enter personal Microsoft login details. According to an apology letter by the firm, it was subject to a phishing attack on a handful of its email addresses.
You can read below the full apology, which is on its website. The ‘author’ of the letter is managing partner David Marshall, whose bio, readers will note, is somewhat incongruously posted under the letter. Just as well, then, that he is “a rare possessor of the ability to keep the big picture and the detail in mind at the same time as being patient, good humoured and supportive with both clients and fellow professionals.”
This is the third public attack on a law firm to emerge in fairly short succession. Earlier this year, DLA Piper was caught up in a global state-sponsored cyber attack and offshore firm Appleby in October admitted a data leak in 2016 in advance of client data potentially being leaked to the press.
An apology
You may have received an email from an Anthony Gold email address which you were not expecting and/or did not understand. Unfortunately, this was due to a phishing attack on a handful of our email addresses, which were then used to send emails purporting to be on our behalf.
The sending of these emails did not compromise your personal data in any way.
If you deleted the email straight away, you do not need to take any further action. If, however, you opened the email and entered your personal Microsoft login details, you may wish to change your password as an extra precaution.
We regularly review our data security practices to ensure the security of our client and contact personal data. We acted swiftly to close down the affected email addresses and mitigate the situation.
Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience or confusion caused.
