Legal IT Newswire… Gavelytics expands judicial analytics to cover San Mateo County Superior Court

Less than one year after launching its judicial analytics platform in Los Angeles, and just two months after initiating its coverage of San Francisco County, Gavelytics today announces that its proprietary database now extends into San Mateo County Superior Court. The Los Angeles-based legal technology company is on pace to roll-out its AI-driven data visualization tool in one new county per month through the remainder of 2018.
“This is another significant milestone for Gavelytics as we develop comprehensive coverage across the State of California and beyond,” said Rick Merrill, founder and CEO of Gavelytics. “Our platform helps litigators make better decisions, win more motions and achieve positive outcomes for their clients. We are eliminating the need for busy lawyers to rely on guesswork and piecemeal, anecdotal information to learn about judges’ tendencies.”
As an example of the invaluable, comparative insights Gavelytics offers to litigators, the platform identifies which San Mateo judges are most likely to grant motions to compel discovery (along with another 100+ types of motions), enabling the modern litigator to aggressively steer discovery practice to benefit her client. Gavelytics also pinpoints which judges receive the most CCP §170.6 peremptory challenges, broken down by filing party and case type, helping litigators learn and understand what local practitioners typically do when first assigned that judge in similar cases.
To illustrate how these types of significant data points help attorneys conduct efficient motion practice and develop custom-tailored litigation strategies, Merrill highlights the fact that the most 170.6’d judge in San Mateo is papered over five times more than the second most papered judge in the county. In addition, there’s a judge who grants motions for summary judgment 56% more often than the county average. In San Mateo County, on average, judges grant anti-SLAPP motions almost 50% more often than judges in San Francisco. No other tool on the market offers this type of county-level information on judges.
As Gavelytics steadily expands its footprint in the state of California, the largest judicial district in the U.S., it is also beginning to turn its attention toward other states.
“Our law firm clients ask us on almost a daily basis when the Gavelytics platform will be available in other jurisdictions in which they litigate,” said Merrill. “My answer to them is nearly always – ‘we are on our way.’”
