The ‘Yoda’ of legal tech is officially launching his Idea Propulsion Laboratory to help law firms innovate. Dennis Kennedy, co-host with Tom Mighell of the well-regarded Kennedy-Mighell Report legal technology podcast, says the lab will be a “think tank” focused on the future of the legal industry offering services, products, collaborations and research & development.
Kennedy was formerly a senior in-house attorney at Mastercard (his official title according to LinkedIn was vice president, senior counsel, Digital Payment and Labs) where he focussed on information technology and supporting Mastercard’s mobile wallet, API and Labs business groups. He helped to create Mastercard’s new technologies center of excellence to bring the legal team up to speed on new tech such as APIs, blockchain and open source.
More recently he has taught at Michigan State University College of Law in a legalRnD program called entrepreneurial lawyers, focussed on legal business model and design and legal technology.
In a blog post, Kennedy says that having had the luxury of time to work out his next moves after Mastercard, which he left in 2017 after almost 10 years, he is launching the lab as an umbrella for all of his next activities.
