Legal transaction management startup Legatics has appointed David Biggs as chief financial officer. Biggs joins Legatics from Farewill, the digital will and probate provider, and he will work with the board and the growing executive team to help scale the business.
Biggs has over 15 years of experience as a chartered accountant, and has spent the last 12 years working with leadership teams to effectively scale fast growth technology businesses. He will advise Legatics on capital allocation and growth strategies, following the business’s £3 million growth financing round in June 2021.
Anthony Seale, Legatics CEO, told Legal IT Insider: “This is part of going from a number of lawyers running the business to really starting to grow an expert functional team.
“David brings significant SaaS expertise. We think of legal tech about how we’re changing the industry but there is this whole other category called SaaS and there are books and books about it – and experts like David.”
He adds in a statement: “This is a new phase for Legatics and I believe that our growing leadership team adds a huge amount of functional expertise to take Legatics to the next stage of our journey.’
Biggs told Legal IT Insider: “I have always loved SaaS companies. There is a real geekiness in underlying metrics like how you can build a commercial function and put a pound in but get £1.50 out. It’s clear that Legatics has a super sticky product that lawyers love and the fact that they are such early stage means there is a huge opportunity to get this in more lawyers hands.”
While Farewill is a B2C company, Biggs was at one stage head of partnerships. He says: “We grew incredibly aggressively in the pandemic. If I can grow a business under that kind of strain I can grow it anywhere.”
Much of the growth focus will be around product, and Legatics is looking to expand its engineering team.
The London-headquartered company has been roughly doubling its numbers year on year since it was founded in 2015. In addition to Biggs’s appointment, Legatics has made three additions to its senior leadership team. Steve Wheeler, Steve Brown and Tina Faghihi have joined the company, as CTO, head of marketing and head of customer success, respectively, and each will bolster core business initiatives that reflect Legatics’s continued focus on putting customers first, simplifying its legal transaction management technology, strengthening financial growth, and driving adoption in new markets.
