Legal AI startup Clearbrief raises $4m financing

Clearbrief, a Word add-in AI provider that helps lawyers with legal writing, has raised an additional funding round of approximately $4m, bringing the total funding to $8m since it was founded in 2020. The round was led by Authentic Ventures, How Women Invest, and existing investor Reign Ventures, which are funds with a strong track record of investments in women-led and diverse teams. US is headquartered in Seattle.

An investment fund affiliated with US law firm Wilson Sonsini also participated in the round, along with existing angel investors.

“With Clearbrief experiencing rapid growth across the AmLaw 200, it was an opportune time to take in some additional capital to fuel the expansion of our team, says Jacqueline Schafer, CEO and founder of Clearbrief. “We liked the opportunity to partner with investors who believe in responsible AI built by diverse teams, with a focus on building a sustainable, profitable business that’s here for the long haul. Our vision is that litigators and in-house teams will draft and analyze every single Word document with Clearbrief. In an AI-powered world, colleagues and courts demand a secure, seamless experience that lets them view the factual and legal evidence behind legal prose while reading and writing.”

Schafer is a former Paul Weiss associate, government appellate litigator, and in-house attorney. Clearbrief’s technology team is led by CTO Jose Saura, who spent two decades at Microsoft leading teams of engineers, data scientists, and researchers solving problems with AI.

Clearbrief holds four issued patents in the AI for legal writing space and integrates with LexisNexis, iManage, Netdocs, Relativity, Clio, MyCase, Fastcase vLex, and CanLII.

Clearbrief’s innovative technology for litigators and in-house compliance teams has won several prominent industry awards, including 2023 Litigation Product of the Year (Legalweek), 2022 Best New App (Clio Cloud Conference), 2022 New Law Company of the Year (Legalweek) and 2021 Legal Tech Startup of the Year (American Legal Technology Awards).
