LawtechUK, the initiative backed by the Ministry of Justice (MoJ), which has since April 2023 supported 80 businesses through its free mentoring programme, has confirmed another 20 places for lawtech companies are now available.
LawtechUK’s mentoring programme has over 60 mentors who deliver online mentoring sessions for each lawtech company, providing one-on-one support to help their business get to the next level. Once an application is approved, lawtech companies are matched with a mentor based on their specific objectives, who is able to answer questions, share insights, and provide targeted support.
Sam Beni, MD and CAIO of Platin VC and a LawtechUK mentor said: “LawtechUK’s programme is a fantastic initiative that effectively connects ambitious startups with mentors who are deeply invested in their success. Law and technology together have become the twin pillars shaping our modern society, influencing how we live, work, and progress. As a mentor with LawtechUK, I’ve had the unique opportunity to work closely with some of the brightest minds in lawtech, supporting them as they navigate the challenges of rapid growth and scaling. Lawtech is truly gaining momentum in terms of venture capital interest, as more investors recognise the potential for transformative change in the legal industry, especially with the infusion of AI technologies into the law value chain. What makes lawtech especially compelling is its potential to democratise access to legal resources, enhance efficiencies, and ultimately reshape the traditional practice of law.”
Other mentors include:
- Tara Waters former chief digital officer
- Natalie Salunke who has a track record of establishing global legal functions within organisations and managing multi-jurisdictional teams
- Andy Robinson who has mentored for organisations such as TechScaler, Barclays Eagle Labs, Kings College, Oxford University, Imperial College and Cambridge Judge Business School
- Brian Liu, co-founder of Legal Zoom
- Maya Markovich, executive director at Justice Tech Association
- Mimi Zou, Professor of Commercial Law, University of Exeter and Visiting Fellow, Oxford Martin School as well as Co-founder of Deriskly
- Chris Grant, head of Legal Market Engagement at HSBC
LawtechUK is currently run by Legal Geek and CodeBase, under a £3m government grant. The mentoring scheme is run by Codebase, which is ranked sixth in the Financial Times Europe’s Leading Start-up Hubs for mentoring and has delivered over 4,500 mentor sessions since 2018.
“We have seen some great companies take part in the mentoring programme including transparently and Xapien (which announced an £8m investment in 2024),” said Kath Warren, head of Lawtech Programme at CodeBase. “Feedback shows that participating companies really value this service that connects them with mentors based on what they specifically need. This opportunity to find an unbiased sounding board and learn from others has proved crucial for many. Feedback from founders say it has increased their confidence in making decisions, prevented common mistakes, provided a deeper understanding of the market opportunities and challenges, and helped them become stronger, more reflective leaders.”
