In this TalkingTech podcast, Dan Hauck, chief product officer at NetDocuments, speaks with Caroline Hill, editor of Legal IT Insider about what the DMS of the future looks like.
Hauck is a former practising lawyer at Brian Cave (now BCLP) and the founder of knowledge management platform ThreadKM, which was acquired by NetDocuments in 2017.
We discussed the AI-powered Intelligent Document Management system announced by NetDocuments at its Inspire user conference, which Hauck says transforms the DMS from an essential content management platform to the cornerstone of a legal or organisation’s AI strategy.
The Intelligence DMS is made up of a legal AI assistant; app Builder powered by PatternBuilder MAX; and a suite of pre-built legal apps.
The big post GenAI question has been how you extract knowledge from the DMS and repurpose it to us it in your workflows. Hauck says: “That’s what the Intelligent DMS is really about. We’ve taken a lot of those foundational capabilities and incorporated them into the document workflow: We’ve incorporated an intelligent chat assistant in the workflow. We’ve incorporated legal apps that can draw upon your existing document and be informed by and grounded in that experience and knowledge, that can understand the client context. That’s why we see it is so important that as organisations are starting to adopt AI, they are bringing AI to their content, not the other way round.”
One advantage of leveraging AI within your DMS is not having to move the data, particularly from a security standpoint.
Hauck says: “We have several different solutions that are part of our new Intelligent platform and when we think about the legal apps, those are things that are designed to be scalable, repeatable and address some of the challenges that people have in terms of how do I get consistent and reliable results.”
