UK litigation analytics company Solomonic today (26 February) publishes its fourth Year in Review, providing insights and trends from the English High Court and Competition Appeal Tribunal.
Solomonic’s data shows that “powerhouses” Clyde & Co, DAC Beachcroft, DWF, RPC and Kennedys retained their top five ranking by litigation activity. The finance sector continues to dominate disputes, and commercial contract disputes remain the most common type of litigation.
The report shows that new litigation is slightly down both across individual claims and group actions. Active ongoing group actions hit an all time high – almost double 2020 levels – which presents a challenge for litigation funders looking to fund new claims.
Interestingly, Solomonic’s report also shows the most tracked cases of 2024. The top one is Getty Images (US) Inc and others v Stability AI Ltd, a trailblazing case concerning AI copyright infringement. Fieldfisher represented the claimant and Bird & Bird the defendant. The second most tracked case is a class action against Standard Chartered, in which over 200 investors are suing the bank, alleging that it made misleading statements and omissions about sanctions compliance from 2007 to 2019. Signature Litigation and Herbert Smith Freehills are acting.
