AI shifts – Automated and agentic workflows: BLTF2025

We spoke with Alex Smelt, account executive at Box, about the premise behind a talk he and Karim Nassar, manager of legal products at Travers Smith gave at British Legal Technology Forum. We also discussed what law firm shifts we can expect to see in 2025.

Smelt and Nassar talked at BLTF about AI powering automated workflows in the legal industry. They looked at how the sector is entering a new era of work, led by lawyers who have trained on AI models, and clients who are expecting a different service in which AI plays a big part. To facilitate that, we are shifting towards the system of intelligence, Smelt said. A large amount of law firm data is unstructured and AI presents an opportunity to unlock that. “If you can unlock the value and understand that data you can automate almost any workflow,” said Smelt.

Meanwhile agentic AI will be a feature of this year and beyond, and what’s interesting is that we may not be exactly replicating the way work is done now but creating new working practices, opening up new opportunities for law firms.
