Gowling WLG blockchain reward token scheme is a hit at ILTA Insight

From our highly scientific poll conducted in a bar after ILTA Insight 2018, the speaker who left the biggest impression at the conference was Gowling WLG’s head of architecture and innovation Jody Jansen, who talked about a firmwide incentives scheme rolled out this summer, which is designed to introduce employees to the basics of blockchain while rewarding them with tokens for free drinks.

Trending… Legal tech circa 2018 and what you can expect from Legal IT Insider

One innovation head tells us they had the popcorn out all last week during a war of words on Twitter, which erupted after Kira Systems’ founder Noah Waisberg at Legal Geek called for the legal tech press at large to become more discerning in its coverage of ‘AI’ and emerging technology and try to help avoid some of the hype. A valid call, I thought it would be worth reminding you of a few things you can expect from Legal IT Insider, given that some of the frustration in that war of words surrounded paid for product endorsements and the like.

Deloitte RPA report admits surprise at lack of vision and IT readiness

Deloitte’s Fourth Global Robotics Survey is out this week with stats that demonstrate a significant uptake in support for the use of Robotic Process Automation in the workplace and a maturing of expectations from the technology but the report also expresses surprise at the lack of vision and ambition for automation and a ‘lack of IT readiness’.

ServiceNow to acquire natural language query tech of FriendlyData

Enterprise cloud service management company ServiceNow, which counts US global law firm Latham & Watkins among its clients, has agreed to acquire the natural language query technology of two-year old San Francisco startup FriendlyData, which will make it easier for non-technical users of the Now Platform to ask questions in plain English.

Access to justice and the urgent need for a law tech revolution

At the recent launch of the Barclays / Law Society Eagle Lab law tech incubator in London, Lord Keen of Elie (Richard Keen QC) said, “There is a lawtech revolution happening all over the world and I want to make sure the UK not only keeps pace with it but leads it.” Clearly as a law tech startup ourselves, we wholeheartedly agree. A report out today (16 April) from the House of Lords select committee on artificial intelligence finds that while the UK has a “unique opportunity” to shape the development of AI, it is essential that ethics take centre stage, with the report recommending the creation of a cross-sector AI Code to help mitigate the risks.
