Australia: Corrs becomes the latest firm to invest in a startup with Beagle JV

Joint ventures between law firms and startups are still far from common (in fact, we’d go as far as to say still rare) but in Australia, Corrs Chambers Westgarth has become the latest local firm to invest in a startup, in an alliance with Canadian AI contract review specialists Beagle.

Law Made to raise $20m startup investment fund

Law Made is to raise a US$20m early stage startup investment fund as its founders add ‘venture capital’ to the portfolio of services they offer new and emerging legal businesses.
The Toronto-headquartered legal innovation pop-up, set up by ‘chief legal provocateur’ Jason Moyse and ‘chief innovation operative’ Aron Solomon, co-founders of MaRS Discovery District’s LegalX Cluster, first publicly announced the intention to raise the fund at yesterday’s (18 October) Legal Geek startup conference in London.

Janders Dean: Meet Amy, our new AI administrative assistant

Janders Dean has this month begun using an artificial intelligence-based bot to liaise with its clients and contacts and schedule meetings.

x.ai personal assistant Amy has since the start of October scheduled close to 20 external meetings for the legal industry management consultancy, ranging from meetings at the Janders Dean offices to partner sessions at its clients’ offices. Her interaction with clients follows a successful internal pilot that began in June.

Startup Corner: ComplyAdvantage raises $8.2m to expand machine learning compliance offering

ComplyAdvantage, which uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to help firms manage their compliance obligations, has raised $8.2 million in a Series A funding round led by Balderton Capital.
The funding will allow the 2014-founded, London-based RegTech firm to grow and increase product penetration across Europe and North America, as its New York office officially opens this week.

Gilbert + Tobin increases stake in lawtech startup LegalVision

Innovative Australian law firm Gilbert + Tobin has increased its stake in lawtech startup LegalVision to nearly 20%, following a second round of financing.

LegalVision gives fixed fee, high volume legal business advice that is kept at a lower cost because it and the business lawyers who work for it operate online.

Nalanda Technology has launched a software-as-a-service search tool capable of searching unstructured data from any device and won Gosschalks Solicitors as a client.
