In this product demonstration, David Murdter, product manager at Harvey and a former patent litigator at Cooley, walks us through how Harvey’s agent module approaches a complex piece of transactional work: planning the tax implications of a corporate merger.
Working from an uploaded transaction step plan that sets out how the merger is to be implemented, Murdter asks the agent to work through each step in turn – identifying the tax consequences, the reliefs available and whether clearance is required – grounded in an England and Wales knowledge source rather than relying on the model’s internal knowledge alone. The demo also covers the composer’s “Improve Prompt” function, which significantly rewrites, and improves, the user’s instruction to reference the selected files and sources before the query is run.
As the agent works, Murdter shows its reasoning traces alongside a progress tracker that lists the steps it intends to take and ticks them off as it proceeds. The resulting memorandum works through some twenty steps, flags the three highest-risk among them, and carries line-level citations – around 130 in this run – that resolve to the underlying sources, so that, as Murdter puts it, each proposition can be traced back to a specified source.
Murdter then turns the chat-based analysis into three work products: a formatted Word memorandum running to around 25 pages, an executive-summary PowerPoint, and an interactive HTML artifact that visualises how the entities, and the flows of money between them, change at each step. Along the way the session touches on Plan mode – reviewing the agent’s intended actions before it executes – the handling of privileged or sensitive data, in-product document editing with version control, and how the whole working can be shared for partner review.
