IRIS join FAST – but don't they own it?

Confusing story here as it has just been announced that the UK's sixth largest software group has joined the Federation Against Software Theft (FAST). Glossing over the fact that, as FAST has been around since 1984, this is not exactly a ringing endorsement that it's taken the sixth largest player in the UK 23 years to get around to joining, the more confusing aspect is the identity of the new member. It's the IRIS Software Group.

Haven't we heard of them before?

Yes, IRIS acquired Vin Murria's CS Group (and with it the legal software suppliers AIM, Laserform, Mountain and Videss) in July this year.

Oh, and in May this year the CS Group bought FAST.

So that means the IRIS Software Group, which has just joined FAST, actually owns FAST.

Er, yes.

I believe IRIS owns the FAST Consultancy and not the actual Federation Against Software Theft.

I take your point but both organisations have the same address and if you look at the FAQ section on the FAST Corporate Services website – – it is very difficult to distinguish where the various FAST organisations begin and end. And indeed the comments made at the time of the CS Group acquisition of FAST would suggest most of the IT industry has difficulty distinguishing one from t'other.

Did IRIS negotiate a bulk discount given how many companies they think they may own ?

We understand FAST Corporate Services and FAST (the Federation Against Software Theft) are planning to clarify the information on the web to explain the difference between the two organisations. At the moment it states “FAST Limited and its subsidiary FAST Corporate Services were established by the Federation.”
