Microsoft releases new Legal Agent for Word

It’s looked to be on the cards for a while and today (30 April), Microsoft announced its new Legal Agent, designed specifically for legal workflows in Microsoft Word. Developed in collaboration with legal engineers, Legal Agent is designed for workflows such as contract review and redlining, rather than adapting general-purpose AI to legal use cases.

As a first-party experience, Legal Agent works directly with Word’s native reviewing tools (including track changes and comments) and is designed to support legal workflows across Microsoft 365. Microsoft says that the agent enables playbook‑driven contract analysis, negotiation‑ready redlining with transparent track changes, and scalable drafting of precise, reviewable legal edits across entire documents.

A post from Microsoft Office Product Group president Sumit Chauhan today says: “The agent applies edits in the document through a purpose-built insertion algorithm to drive consistency regardless of how each edit was introduced. The agent’s redlining engine understands the structure of a Word document, not just visible text. It understands and structures Microsoft 365 document format into a representation that preserves formatting, lists, tables, and tracked changes. From there, the agent applies a deterministic resolution layer over the edits, including author-specific changes, instead of relying on an LLM to generate every revision directly. This provides a more reliable foundation for handling complex contracts while helping reduce latency and cost.”

This development will be watched with great and also wary interest. Microsoft has been increasingly building its legal specific capability, including earlier in April, new legal functionality in Copilot that put it in competition with document review vendors. On the one hand, its Microsoft, with its billions of tech investment, familiarity, and functionality that falls within the secure and governed 365 world. On the other, we know from experience that a deep understanding of the legal workflow and product excellence succeed over and above convenience every time in this space, so we await further information and updates.
