European Legal AI platform Noxtua has announced a partnership with US legal research challenger Midpage that its founders say marks a first for the market: access to American case law, statutes, and regulations hosted on European cloud infrastructure.
The deal means that European legal professionals can research US federal and state law through Noxtua’s workspace without their data touching US servers, helping to overcome some of the complexities around Europe’s GDPR requirements for US data storage. Users are also said to be protected from the US CLOUD Act, as all the data provided by clients is processed on Noxtua’s independent European AI infrastructure.
Noxtua, which grew out of research at Oxford University and Imperial College London and has built its reputation on GDPR-compliant, certified European AI infrastructure, positions the integration as proof that sovereignty and global utility are not mutually exclusive. Midpage, an AI-driven legal research platform founded in 2022 from ETH Zurich research and now used by more than 300 law firms and companies, provides a daily-updated research platform covering all binding US federal and state opinions.
Speaking about the tie-up, Noxtua CEO and co-founder Dr. Leif-Nissen Lundbæk said the partnership delivers something no competitor currently offers. “This collaboration with Midpage underlines our focus on Europe first with growing global relevance. We can now offer what no competitor can do: Access to US legal data hosted on European infrastructure to support European legal professionals in legal issues relating to the US. With this, we demonstrate once more how to serve the demanding needs of legal professionals and how to be successful as a beacon of European digital sovereignty.”
Midpage founder and CEO Otto von Zastrow framed it as a meeting of like-minded organisations with shared academic roots and a shared philosophy. “With Midpage, we’re building the largest case law dataset and will offer this to European legal experts through the integration in Noxtua. This combines legal and AI expertise across the Atlantic Ocean with the goal to support legal experts, making their daily legal work easier and more efficient,” he said.
The significance here goes beyond a content licensing deal. For European law firms advising clients on transatlantic matters, the ability to research US law has traditionally meant either using US-hosted platforms or navigating data sovereignty trade-offs. This partnership, if it delivers as described, closes that gap.
The Midpage module will be available to Noxtua users as an optional add-on in the coming weeks, with pricing details to follow.
