Comment: IT is a tier one investment – why law firms should buy into it

As firms enter a new financial year, budget allocation and expenditure gets well underway, with each department battling for a piece of the pie. Available budget is often redirected to other areas of the business to favour staff bonuses, business development and branding, leaving the IT department with little investment to cope with security threats aimed at the legal sector. The number of financial transactions that take place within law firms has made them a target for cybersecurity attacks from criminals worldwide. Therefore, IT must be considered as a tier one investment and not an afterthought which may suffer from reduced funding.

iManage New Customer Acquisition More Than Doubles Year Over Year

iManage just announced that its acquisition of new customers more than doubled from Q1 2015 to Q1 2016. The company continues to gain global momentum among both large and mid-sized law firms, as well as corporate legal departments, and accounting firms. During the first quarter of 2016, iManage added more than 50 new customers and saw existing customers expand their iManage footprint by adding mobility and cloud solutions.

One to watch: Morae Legal hires duo including former Huron Consulting MD Robert Haskin

It’s been a year of significant growth for Houston-headquartered legal consulting and solutions startup Morae Legal, which has now hired former Huron Consulting Group (HCG) managing director Robert Haskin as its MD and Mori Kabiri from Kiersted Systems as senior director.

Haskin has spent the last 14 years helping corporate legal and IT departments improve their discovery management functions by designing and implementing innovative solutions, including advanced data analytics. In May 2002 he joined HCG, working within Huron Legal, which was acquired by Consilio in January this year.

LSSA distances itself from Free2Convey citing a difference in vision for the future

In the latest instalment of a saga that is beginning to have more twists and turns than Game of Thones, the Legal Software Suppliers Association (LSSA) has decided to distance itself from free conveyancing portal Free2Convey. Free2Convey was launched by the LSSA in the autumn of 2015 and was largely responsible for the demise of the Law Society’s rival pay-for online conveyancing offering Veyo, which was mothballed in December with losses of over £7m.

Barclays to develop blockchain-inspired legal contract template after London accelerator programme

A Barclays accelerator programme showcasing innovative fintech ideas from 11 startups has led to the bank agreeing to develop a blockchain-inspired prototype called Smart Contract Templates put forward by an internal Barclays team.

The Barclays team, taking part in Barclays Accelerator London programme, produced a prototype that combines legal agreements with business logic to create financial trades that run as smart contracts. It is the first public demonstration of an application based on Corda – a distributed ledger platform to manage financial agreements, which was only this month unveiled by global banking consortium R3. R3 was formed by nine banks including Barclays to research and develop blockchain technology and has since grown exponentially.
