Division / Department description Efficient and effective IT systems are essential to the effective operation of a global law firm like Herbert Smith Freehills. The information technology team keeps our global team of lawyers and the supporting business services staff connected whether we’re in the office or on the move.
Information technology is responsible for everything information systems–related. That includes:
technical support: IT helpdesks, asset management (including laptops and mobile devices) and technical training
infrastructure: networks and systems, servers (real and virtualised), disaster recovery, business continuity and IT security
development: designing and acquiring business applications.
While the roles within the division may vary, all involve providing the very best services and systems. You may also have the opportunity to work on challenging projects across the firm.

The Server team are responsible for the strategic direction, operational and project delivery of the whole server and storage environment. This includes:
Storage of data
Backup of data/servers/SQL
SQL databases (“out of the box” maintenance/DBA routines/installation)
Datacentre Environment (within server racks only)
Server Applications (monitoring tools etc)
This role requires excellent technical, initiative and communication skills to ensure consistent delivery of services. It is necessary that an awareness of the environment across all platforms is understood and that this knowledge is articulated clearly at all times. Work as an integral member of the team. Effectively adapt to rapidly changing technology and apply it to business needs, executing a proactive and creative approach to resolving business problems through the use of technology. To progress assigned projects and tasks with the aim of delivering them on time and to budget using agreed Project Management procedures. Work with third party vendors (e.g. Microsoft) to facilitate problem resolution. Assess and recommend architectural designs/changes to systems in response to performance issues, growth requirements etc. Work closely with the firm’s International offices to ensure they are fully catered for.
As a key part of the role within the Server team, the analyst will be working closely with the Infrastructure Architects as a subject matter expert (SME) in any or all of the technologies described above to deliver products as part of project teams. The analyst will be working with the Server team to support the server environment within Herbert Smith Freehills on a 24 hour, on call rota, as well as part of an early, core and late shift rota in the capacity of 3rd line support. The Team also work with the rest of IT, other Support teams and the firm as a whole to:
Agree server hardware and software technology direction and roadmap(s)
Support all above technologies on a day to day operational basis
Deliver projects where the above technologies form part or all of the product
Microsoft certification (MCSE or similar)
Ability to demonstrate sound knowledge of enterprise storage. Preferably Netapp.
Understanding of SQL
Ability to demonstrate real world experience of using powershell to manage Server infrastructure
Sound evidence of working experience in as many or all of the above technologies in a similar, 3rd line role
Day to day management of server hardware
Day to day management of server operating systems (Windows, Linux etc) ensuring all patches are regularly assessed and applied
Day to day management of Netapp storage Hardware and OnTap OS
Day to day monitoring of capacity and availability of all servers and storage devices globally
Creation and provision of capacity and availability reports as required
Management of the storage of data
Ensuring all systems are backed up where required and can be restored when required
The daily management of SQL Server in an “out of the box” capacity. Working with applications teams who will be responsible for more bespoke aspects of SQL Server databases
Managing cabling and patching in datacentres within datacentre Environment (within server racks only)
Experience of working with Agile delivery methodologies preferable.
Provision and management of the base Active Directory domain in order to provide a foundation for desktop, administration and application teams to build and maintain the user environments
Maintenance of server management tools such as SCCM, SCOM etc
