SalesForce.com has acquired Entropysoft in order to integrate the company’s connector technology into their own suite of products. According to ediscovery systems vendor Recommind, this could leave law firms at risk as some of the largest ediscovery and information governance vendors will lose access to their market tested connectors.
David Baskin, general manager, eDiscovery, Recommind*, says “For more than a decade, major software developers have relied on Entropysoft to connect to sources of unstructured and semi-structured information, including popular applications by IBM and Symantec. If Salesforce keeps Entropysoft’s technology for its own exclusive use, some of the largest ediscovery and information governance vendors will lose access to their market-tested connectors. And if this happens, their customers will face a serious risk of having data incompletely or inaccurately extracted, raising their uncertainty and their expense – exactly the opposite of what ediscovery and governance software is supposed to achieve. Without an obvious alternative to Entropysoft, many vendors will need to build their own connectors, a process we estimate will take at least 18 months.
* Recommind developed proprietary connectors over a decade ago, so doesn’t need third-party software to join data from multiple sources.
