LOD and SYKE formally launch in US with New York office

Alternative legal service providers LOD and SYKE have formally launched in the US with an office in New York, led by Lewis Bretts, who has been promoted from his role of chief operating officer and chief legal engineer at SYKE to group managing director of the combined business.

LOD acquired SYKE last year, but the businesses continue to maintain separate corporate identities. LOD focuses on flexible resourcing, while SYKE provides managed services, legal operations consultancy and legal technology implementation. The pair hired their first US head, Trayce Marcelle, in October last year. Marcelle stays on as head of the legal technology business in the US, reporting to Bretts. Also in the New York office is LOD client solutions manager Lewis Davey.

Bretts, a former commercial barrister who joined SYKE as a consultant in 2019, told Legal IT Insider: “We’ll grow the office in line with client demand. We have hundreds of lawyers and legal technologists on our books and a number of US clients, and the plan is to scale rapidly and look at opening an office on the West Coast, but growth will be in line with client demand.”

LOD Group CEO, Tom Hartley said: “We’ve been doing more and more work for our multinational clients across the United States, so it’s a natural step for us to accelerate our business here with a location on the ground. Supporting the best in-house legal professionals to love what they do, giving them the autonomy and flexibility they strive for, has always been a cornerstone of our success, so it’s very exciting to expand and grow this offering in the U.S.”

In November last year, LOD and SYKE expanded into Australia, led by James Kenney, who has been part of the LOD business for seven years.
