ILTACON Europe returns to London – here’s all the details you need

ILTACON Europe returns to London at the offices of Allen & Overy on Thursday 17 November 2022 as an in-person event, after a couple of years hiatus.

The event is being co-chaired by Andrew Powell, CIO of Macfarlanes, and Damien Behan, IT director at Brodies. This year ILTA has a new format, moving to a single day, with fewer sessions and plenty of opportunity to interact with other delegates and sponsors.

Speakers include Hannah Fry (Professor in the Mathematics of Cities, science presenter, podcaster, author and AI expert); Stephen Carver (Senior Lecturer in Project and Programme Management at Cranfield University); Martin Hale (Chair, CXO Leading Change @ Work); David Gauke (former UK Government Cabinet Minister); the National Cyber Security Centre; and Dr Rob Archer (psychologist and UK director at Cognacity). While the sessions are principally aimed at CIO, CTO and CISO roles, they are equally relevant to senior managers in PMO, facilities, lawtech and innovation teams.

Interestingly the sessions are largely focused on people, not technology. Powell told Legal IT Insider: “This is aimed at senior people, all of whom know where to go to get technical expertise but having come through a period of lockdown and not been face-to-face for so long, a lot of human factors have come through as a challenge for IT departments. With that in mind, we’ve gone for experts in their field to talk about those challenges.

“We’ve got David Gauke speaking about the economic factors and political factors relating to Russia and the Ukraine and he’s a great speaker, as well as the NCSC talking about the bad actors coming out of Eastern Europe and targeting law firms. That leads straight into a psychological talk about performing under pressure – say you get hit by ransomware, how do you keep your team performing well?”

The agenda can be found here: https://europe.iltacon.org/programme, but here’s a quick run-down of the agenda, which starts at 9am and finishes at 5pm, to be followed by a drinks reception:

  • Human or Machine? The trouble with automating law – Dr Hannah Fry
  • Complexity: it doesn’t have to be complicated! – Steven Carver
  • The Future Workplace panel discussion – chaired by Martin Hale
  • Cyber Security and the Political Landscape post-Ukraine – David Gauke and a speaker from NCSC
  • Performing Under Pressure – Dr Rob Archer

In news that will be welcome to the companies bankrolling the conference, the organisers are keen to stress that sponsors will be encouraged to attend the sessions, with Powell commenting: “Quite often sponsors told to stay away and man their booths but we want them in the auditorium listening to the content, so we have 50 spaces for sponsors.”

If you would like to attend, you need to register here: https://europe.iltacon.org/home#reg

You don’t need to be an ILTA member, and attendance is free of charge for law firms and corporate legal departments. However, if you are not an ILTA member you will need to create an account as part of the login process.
