Good data is the basis of every successful AI project. In this webinar with iManage’s global solutions director Paul Walker, we discussed some of the current challenges that legal organisations are experiencing around cleaning up their data; the steps they are taking to overcome them; and the huge opportunities for organisations in leveraging good data.
There is a perception that legal tech is a ‘laggard’ compared to other sectors such as telecoms and banking. We discussed whether that is a fair perception, and how are things are changing in the age of generative AI. Historically, technology hasn’t ‘understood’ unstructured language, which is the currency of law, so, Walker said, the term ‘laggard’ is unfair. Now, technology is opening up opportunities that haven’t previously been available.
In terms of the steps that people are taking to get their data into shape, ‘cleaning up’ is just a part of it, and we discussed the steps that law firms are taking to understand their data and build it into collections that can more easily be interrogated by AI. We also looked at the work being done behind the scenes by iManage with Insight +, and why they have introduced a services offering with Wayfinder to help customers.
GenAI isn’t magic, as we know, but it is speeding up arduous tasks that have previously been done badly, and we dived into the work being done around auto-classification. We also discussed the current capabilities and risks around semantic search, and the need to exclude some sensitive content from the reach AI.
iManage has been accused of not being an open platform and we discussed its recent partnerships and interoperability, plus the use of Anthropic’s model context protocol (MCP) to connect it to the likes of ChatGPT Enterprise.
With a view to keeping opportunities squarely in mind we discussed an interesting project being undertaken by Rio Tinto of exactly the nature described above.
