Agenda
The legal sector is facing disruption from clients and from tech-led innovation and unless law firms have a strategy, that disruption will come from directions they previously could not imagine.
This conference will draw together two major global clients to discuss how they are using technology to drive change; and high profile speakers from the likes of Microsoft to talk about the practical shape that innovation may take. Legal tech visionary and now AI-investor Mike Lynch will discuss how the sector has, is and will be disrupted, while senior professional services heads David Cullen-Jones and David Potts from Accenture will talk about examples of large scale disruption and innovation outside of legal and how corporates – including Accenture itself – are responding to the challenges led by data and better people management. Last but by no means least, we will hear about advances in AI from the CTO of triple IBM Watson accredited company Volume Global, which is one of the few companies to have taken artificially intelligent applications to market and one of the only businesses to have resident robots -one of which will be in attendance at Gleneagles.
– 09.00 – 09:15 – Setting the Scene – Mike Rebeiro, Global Head of Technology and Innovation at Norton Rose Fulbright and conference chair
Mike will talk about the challenges facing the profession from widespread disruption and the potential consequences for those who choose to ignore it.
– 09.15 – 10.00 – Hans Albers, Chief of Staff/Head of World Wide Legal Operations at Juniper Networks International B.V.
Juniper Networks’ legal team has put technology at the heart of an extensive transformation programme. Hans will set out his vision as to how the legal department will run and interact with external counsel going forward.
– 10.00 – 10.45 – Stéphanie Hamon, Head of Commercial Management, Managing Director at Barclays
For Barclays, the fact that its panel law firms provide excellent legal advice is a hygiene factor. In a new era for external legal services providers, the emphasis is now on innovation, legal process management and technological collaboration. However, Hamon will give us insight into how one or two old fashioned values still give firms the edge.
– 10.45 – 11.30 – Coffee Break and Networking
– 11.30 – 12.15 – David Cullen-Jones, Managing Director and David Potts, Director at Accenture
Accenture managing director David Cullen-Jones and director David Potts will talk about the impact of digital disruption on corporates that have seen their market cap drop as they lack the agility to move quickly to respond to market changes. They will also discuss how Accenture has disrupted itself, with analytics and insight at the heart of that transformation programme. Recent research by Accenture has shown that managing your people is key to all of this and Cullen-Jones and Potts will discuss these findings and how understanding and working with millennials is key.
– 12.15 – 13.45 – Lunch and Networking
– 13.45 – 14.30 – Mike Lynch, Founder of Invoke Capital and technology Entrepreneur
Lynch, a legal technology visionary and one of the biggest names in the software business, will give us an overview of how the sector is being disrupted and how that disruption will accelerate with the advent of AI and machine learning-based solutions. Lynch’s investment vehicle Invoke Capital is focussed on investing in disruptive technologies, including due diligence tool Luminance.
– 14.30 – 15.15 – Steven Grier, Country Manager (Scotland) at Microsoft
Grier, who is Country Manager for Microsoft in Scotland and a 17-year senior evangelist for Microsoft technology, will give an in-depth view of Microsoft’s current technology strategy and thinking around several innovation areas including cloud services like Office365 and Azure, where we’ll take a look at challenges and approaches to adoption, security, assurance and change management futures along with several other key technology areas including AI, accessibility, hardware futures and mobility platforms. We will be asking delegates to send us their questions for Grier in advance of the session, to facilitate a Question Time session after his presentation.
– 15.15 – 16.00 – Benoit Alvarez, CTO at Volume Global
Three times IBM Watson accredited company Volume Global is working with the earliest adopters of artificial intelligence and believes that we will soon be naturally talking and interacting with technology. As Volume’s Chief Technology Officer (CTO), Alvarez manages the UK Innovation Hub – a team of 40 people including data scientists, AI developers, UX developers, C#/ASP.NET developers and product owners that work for clients such as Dell, Virgin Media, HP Inc., HP enterprise, Plantronics, BP, Oracle and Bureau Veritas. He will talk about developments in AI, machine learning and virtual assistants, most of which have yet to impact on the legal sector but let’s face it, it’s just a matter of time.
16.00 – 16.30 – Champagne afternoon tea and Networking
16.30 – 18.00 – Quiz – Man against The Machine
The final session of the day is specifically designed to allow the sponsors to engage with the speakers and delegates in a very light hearted and enjoyable fashion. Without the sponsors support the event would not be commercially viable so all delegates and speakers are asked to fully engage in this session (naturally with the help of Champagne and cakes which will be served throughout this session). The final format of this session in keeping with last year’s event will be a guarded secret to make it truly enjoyable and rest assured it will not be death by powerpoint! Following the conclusion of the day’s educational content there will be an interlude before the evenings dinner commences to allow guests to catch up on work, get some exercise or just enjoy the beautiful surroundings at Gleneagles.
18.00 – 19.00 – Free time
19.00 – 19.45 – Pre-dinner drinks and Networking
19.45 – 21.15 – Dinner
21.15 – Informal Networking
