The September Orange Rag Is Here!

Welcome to the September Orange Rag, where I expect much like me, the summer seems a long distant memory and you’re just a bit swamped as the end of the year comes in sight.

Several themes jump out this month. The ILTA 2025 Technology Survey revealed just how rapidly generative AI is being explored across firms of all sizes, with Microsoft 365 Copilot, Thomson Reuters CoCounsel and Harvey among those leading the charge. The conversation has clearly shifted from curiosity to investment, albeit there are some worrying stats for firms of 50 lawyers and under. Take a look at ILTA’s chart of where firms are on the adoption curve – it’s a great bit of data.

Innovation in legal education is also in my top stories, with Freshfields launching a pioneering Masters in Law & Technology at King’s College London. I spoke with Freshfields’ global chief innovation officer Gil Perez about the efforts being made to educate trainees, but also the importance of changing the mindset and skills in your firm.

And I do a bit of myth busting with Yannic Kilcher when it comes to Model Context Protocol – spoiler alert, it is not a magic bullet. We talk back to basics about what MCP is and does, as well as its significance in terms of the future of search.

On the wins and deals front, we’ve seen a flurry of partnerships and product launches: Lawfront’s adoption of Jylo as its group-wide AI platform and Deloitte Legal’s collaboration with Legora point to a sector that’s not just talking about transformation, but actively building it.

The pace of change in legal technology is only accelerating. Stay tuned for more news and updates, and don’t forget to check out the upcoming 30th anniversary celebration for Legal IT Insider!
